At the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we recognize that employees are our strongest asset and we work hard to provide one of the best working environments. This includes everything from work-life balance, to competitive pay packages and conditions, opportunities for learning and development, a dynamic and multicultural working environment that represents our diverse membership base, right through to safe and vibrant working areas that have been constructed according to the latest standards in environment, health and safety.
Sustainability is at the heart of our organization because we are here to develop Dubai’s business community by delivering products and services designed to represent, support and protect their interests both now and in the future. One way we do this is through our Centre for Responsible Business, which assists Dubai businesses in acting responsibly and adapting high social, environmental and ethical standards. Our Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award is another way in which we seek to support and encourage excellence and responsible business practices among our members. We also seek the same with our suppliers by applying our Sustainable Purchasing Policy and working with them to source socially and environmentally responsible solutions.
Dubai Chamber recognizes that resource scarcity and pollution issues such as climate change will seriously challenge the success of businesses and communities if they are not addressed. Further, we realize that there is a great opportunity in better managing resources and waste across all organizations as it reduces costs and enhances competitiveness.
Since 1998 Dubai Chamber has undertaken a number of steps, particularly in terms of energy and water use, to improve its environmental performance. This allowed us to reduce potable water and energy consumption per building occupant by 94% and 57% respectively saving over $4.9 million in over 15 years. In 2009 we became the 1st existing building in the Arab world and 4th outside of North America to achieve the coveted LEED certification for Existing Buildings. Since then we retrofitted our head office and applied the latest solutions to improve our building performance. This led us to achieve LEED Platinum for existing buildings in 2014 and 2018, another first in the Arab world.
We are proud to offer one of the safest, healthiest, environmentally friendly and design winning workplaces in Dubai for our staff and tenants. This has led to us winning numerous awards for green building and design. Highlights can be viewed in the attached case study.
Dubai Chamber recognizes that healthy and vibrant communities are key to sustaining a healthy and vibrant business community. We work hard to encourage a number of community initiatives and support various causes. This helps us improve society, develop the skills of our employees, enhance the practices of businesses, develop job skills among youth and encourage entrepreneurship in Dubai while also fulfilling our mission.
Each year, we support a number of causes in cash or through the provision of facilities and the time of our staff. This includes fundraising to support social needs, participating in charity challenges, donating blood and sharing knowledge on sustainability and more. We also regularly train staff about UAE culture and language, so that they can better integrate and contribute to this country, and endorse various local and global campaigns like Earth Hour, Public Transport Day as well as World Health and Safety at Work Day.
Our biggest contribution to the community remains our ongoing support to the University of Dubai which we founded in 1997 to develop local business talent. This includes providing student scholarships, a campus and other facilities to assist this institution in developing hundreds of expert individuals each year.
The CSR Report 2020 highlights Dubai Chamber’s key CSR achievements which relate to community, marketplace, workplace and environment.
