Introducing Kurdistan

This page provides a brief overview of the key facts and figures of the Iraqi Region of Kurdistan.

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq is one of the most stable regions in Iraq in terms of security. It occupies a strategic position between Iraq and Turkey, i.e. in between Central Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, Iraq’s economy is fast becoming a major destination for trade and investment due in part to the large hydrocarbon reserves of the country and also due to favourable demographics.

The Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) includes three main cities: Erbil (capital), Sulaymaniyah and Duhok with a total of 40,643 square km. KRG gained its autonomy in 1970 and its status as an autonomous region was re-confirmed by the Iraqi Republic in 2005.
