SEE Macroeconomic Focus 2011H2
This is the first inaugurating issue of the “SEE Macroeconomic Focus”. The publication aspires to provide a concise and an insightful overview of the economies in the Southern Eastern Europe (SEE: Albania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania and Cyprus. It also offers a detailed analysis of the main economic and market developments of the last quarter in the aforementioned SEE countries. Since the summer of 2008 the global economy is tarnished by a credit crisis which has the capacity to damage the countries we are analyzing through international capital inflows. The countries in the SEE are experiencing deteriorating current account deficits which need to be financed by portfolio and Foreign Direct Investments. However, the global credit crunch constrains the ability of these countries to secure liquidity and finance their mounting external imbalances. The combination of external and internal imbalances in the form of fiscal deficits for some of the countries can deteriorate further their economic stability. Along the lines of an intense macroeconomic analysis in the text on those countries, the purpose of this publication is to evaluate their performance relative to the real GDP, current account, financial account and fiscal balances.
